State Department Addresses Rumors

In a recent press briefing, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller firmly denied rumors suggesting that the United States is considering expelling Indian diplomats. These speculations arose amid heightened diplomatic tensions between India and Canada following Canada’s identification of Indian diplomats as “persons of interest” in the investigation into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Clarification on Diplomatic Relations

Miller stated, “I am not familiar with this report that we expelled Indian diplomats… I’m not aware of any such expulsion.” His comments aimed to clarify the US stance amidst growing speculation surrounding diplomatic relations.

Escalating Diplomatic Fallout

The diplomatic situation has become increasingly strained, especially after India withdrew six of its diplomats from Canada in response to the Canadian government’s actions. In retaliation, India expelled six Canadian diplomats from New Delhi, further intensifying the rift between the two nations.

US Involvement in Vikash Yadav Case

Separately, the State Department addressed the case of Vikash Yadav, a former Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) official recently implicated in a plot to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on US soil. When asked about the possibility of Yadav’s extradition, Miller clarified that such decisions are managed by the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

Expectations for Accountability

Miller noted that the US has engaged in ongoing discussions with the Indian government regarding the investigation into the assassination plot. He expressed the expectation for “real accountability” from India as these discussions continue. The FBI has listed Yadav as “wanted” in connection with the foiled assassination attempt.

Confirmation of Yadav’s Status

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that Vikash Yadav, named in the indictment, is no longer associated with any official capacity within the Indian government. This clarification comes as both nations navigate the complexities of their diplomatic ties amidst serious allegations and ongoing investigations.
