In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Hollywood icon Samuel L. Jackson shared his candid perspective on the Oscars, underscoring the importance of winning over mere nominations. Jackson, whose career spans several decades, opened up about his views on the awards process and how he prioritizes personal satisfaction and fulfilling roles over the pursuit of accolades.
“It’s an Honor to Win, Not Just Be Nominated”
Jackson’s comments reflected a practical, no-nonsense approach to the Academy Awards. “We’ve been in the business long enough to know that when folks go, ‘It’s just an honor to be nominated.’ No, it ain’t. It’s an honor to win,” Jackson remarked, dismissing the notion that nominations are the ultimate recognition. He emphasized that nominations often fade from public memory unless they result in a win. “They nominate you and people go, ‘What is that movie you’re nominated for?’ And after it’s over, people have a hard time remembering who even won,” he added.

Success Defined by Personal Happiness, Not Awards
While his views on the Oscars may be candid, Jackson has long made it clear that awards are not the defining measure of his career. In a 2022 interview with The Times, he explained that the Oscars had never been his personal gauge for success. “My yardstick of success is my happiness: Am I satisfied with what I’m doing?” Jackson said. He further revealed that he does not chase awards or “statue-chasing movies,” opting instead to pursue roles that bring him joy. “I’d rather be Nick Fury. Or having fun being Mace Windu with a lightsaber in my hand,” he shared, emphasizing the importance of enjoying his work rather than seeking recognition.
Oscar Nominations and the Honorary Award
Despite his legendary career, Jackson has received only one Oscar nomination—Best Supporting Actor for his iconic performance in Pulp Fiction (1995). However, in 2021, the Academy recognized his exceptional contributions to cinema by awarding him an honorary Academy Award. This recognition, Jackson noted, was a significant moment, but it did not change his fundamental view on awards.
With his emphasis on joy and fulfillment, Samuel L. Jackson continues to inspire audiences not just through his celebrated roles but through his unapologetic approach to success in the entertainment industry.
