Historic Inspiration for a Modern Ride
Royal Enfield, the iconic motorcycle manufacturer, has announced an exciting addition to its lineup: an all-electric motorcycle under a new sub-brand named “Flying Flea.” Set to begin deliveries in 2026, these urban-focused electric bikes pay homage to the lightweight gas-powered models that were famously parachuted to British Army Red Berets during World War II. Known as “Flying Flea,” these motorcycles were prized for their agility and efficiency in facilitating communication and mobility on the battlefield.
From WWII to Electric Innovation
The Flying Flea’s design lineage can be traced back to a pre-war model created by German manufacturer DKW, which was adapted and utilized by Royal Enfield during the war. The new electric version aims to capture the spirit of those original bikes while providing a sustainable, gas-free riding option for urban environments.

Royal Enfield’s Rich Heritage
Founded in England in 1901, Royal Enfield shifted its focus to India after the brand’s operations ceased in the UK during the 1970s. The brand quickly found success with its rugged and reliable single-cylinder “Bullet” motorcycles, which became cultural icons in India. Despite being out of production, the Bullet remains a symbol of nostalgia, akin to Jeeps in the U.S. or Range Rovers in Britain.
Modernization and Market Expansion
In the mid-1990s, Eicher Motors acquired Royal Enfield, revitalizing the brand by establishing a state-of-the-art factory in Chennai, India. This modernization led to the production of contemporary models while retaining the classic aesthetic that fans love. The launch of stylish 650 twin-cylinder models in 2018 marked a turning point for the brand, enabling it to gain traction in international markets.
A New Era of Production
Today, Royal Enfield boasts impressive production capabilities, manufacturing a motorcycle every 40 seconds, a significant increase from the previous rate of 1,000 per month. This robust production aligns with the company’s goal to meet the growing demands of motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide.
As Royal Enfield gears up for the debut of the Flying Flea electric motorcycle, the combination of historical significance and modern technology promises an exciting future for both the brand and its riders.
