Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Calls for Swift Action Against Online Abuse

In a significant move aimed at curbing online harassment, Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister, Pawan Kalyan, proposed the introduction of a Social Media Abuse Protection Bill in the state Assembly on Thursday. Kalyan highlighted the increasing issue of online abuse, particularly targeting public figures, and stressed the need for the government to take swift action to protect citizens from digital harassment.

Speaking during the Assembly session, Kalyan outlined that the proposed bill should be the result of informed discussions, with careful consideration and collaboration between the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and lawmakers. The goal, according to Kalyan, is to draft a comprehensive law that addresses the rising tide of online abuse in the state and provides citizens with effective legal recourse.

Focus on Protecting Public Figures, Especially Women

A key concern for Kalyan is the psychological impact of online abuse, particularly towards public figures and women. He referenced instances of harassment faced by female politicians, including Home Minister Anitha, noting that online abuse has turned “sadistic.” Kalyan’s proposal seeks to extend legal protections to those facing online harassment, ensuring that such malicious behavior is met with appropriate legal action.

“It’s not just about the public figures. The abuse has permeated so deeply that even our Home Minister and ordinary citizens have been affected. The harassment has become inhumane,” Kalyan said during his speech. He called for strong measures to hold those responsible for cyber abuse accountable.

Political Influence and the Culture of Fear on Social Media

Kalyan also drew attention to the increasing misuse of social media by political leaders and groups, warning that the platforms have become tools for controlling public opinion and silencing dissent. He criticized political factions for using social media to create a culture of fear, particularly through the use of “abusive cartels” designed to intimidate anyone who challenges the political narrative.

Referencing comments by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Kalyan highlighted the growing influence of social media armies in Andhra Pradesh. These online groups, according to Kalyan, are undermining democracy by attacking individuals who voice differing opinions. “When even someone like you, who has served as an MP, can be subjected to such treatment, imagine what the common man goes through,” he said, underlining the need for systemic change.

Kalyan Advocates for Freedom of Expression Online

The Deputy CM also stressed the importance of preserving the fundamental right of freedom of expression, particularly in the online space. He condemned the manipulation of social media for political gain and argued that the state should lead by example in ensuring that citizens are free to express their opinions without fear of retaliation or harassment.

“This mindset must change. We must ensure that people can express themselves freely, without the threat of reprisal. The right to speak freely is fundamental to any democracy,” Kalyan added.

A Broader Push for Safe Online Spaces

Kalyan’s proposal aligns with ongoing discussions across political parties regarding online abuse. YS Sharmila from Congress has also voiced her support for a safer social media space, calling for stronger regulation to protect individuals from cyber bullying and political harassment. Kalyan’s proposal for a Social Media Abuse Protection Bill aims to fill this gap and create a framework for tackling online harassment effectively.
