Verstappen Secures Historic Title
Max Verstappen achieved a historic milestone on 23 November 2024, as he secured his fourth consecutive World Drivers’ Championship title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Finishing fifth in the race, Verstappen’s points total became unassailable, extending his lead over closest rival Lando Norris to a commanding 64 points. This victory places Verstappen alongside Sebastian Vettel, who also won four consecutive titles during his time at Red Bull.
Las Vegas GP Highlights
The Las Vegas Grand Prix saw Mercedes’ George Russell dominate the weekend, securing his second victory of the season and the third of his career. Russell led all 50 laps, with his teammate Lewis Hamilton finishing in second, a strong finish after a valiant push in the final 20 laps. Carlos Sainz of Ferrari rounded out the podium with a third-place finish. Mercedes’ clean sweep included securing pole position and top spots in practice sessions, making it a near-perfect weekend for the team.
Verstappen’s Unstoppable Lead
Verstappen’s fifth-place finish, coupled with Norris’ sixth, ensured he could not be caught in the standings. The title was sealed in the 22nd race of the season, making Verstappen the third driver to win the championship at the Las Vegas circuit. Previously, Nelson Piquet (1981) and Keke Rosberg (1982) also secured their titles in Las Vegas.
Challenges for Other Drivers
It was a challenging race for some drivers. Pierre Gasly faced an engine failure on lap 16, ending a promising weekend after starting from third on the grid. Williams Racing’s Alex Albon also struggled, retiring on lap 26 due to a power unit issue, capping off a disappointing race for the team. McLaren’s weekend was similarly affected by a rear wing issue, which hindered both of their cars, potentially costing them the Constructors’ Championship. Ferrari took advantage of McLaren’s troubles, narrowing the gap to just 24 points behind them, with Red Bull also in contention for the championship, 53 points behind.
Looking Ahead to the Final Races
With two races left in the season, the Constructors’ Championship remains up for grabs, with McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull all still in contention. As Verstappen celebrates his personal achievement, the battle for team honors intensifies, particularly as the series heads to the Qatar Grand Prix for the penultimate race of the season.
