Conflict in Lebanon Nearing an End After Nearly a Year of Hostilities
New Delhi, Nov 27, 2024 – Israel’s security cabinet has approved a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, signaling a potential end to the devastating conflict that has plagued Lebanon for nearly a year. The deal, which aims to halt the violence between Israeli forces and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia, has resulted in significant casualties, with nearly 3,800 lives lost in Lebanon and 16,000 others injured.
U.S. and France to Announce Ceasefire Deal
Following the Israeli security cabinet’s approval on Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to jointly announce the ceasefire deal on November 27. The announcement marks a significant step towards peace in Lebanon, although it is not expected to directly impact the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Terms of the Ceasefire Deal
The agreement calls for Israeli troops to withdraw from southern Lebanon, with the Lebanese army taking over control of the region. Hezbollah, in turn, will end its military presence south of the Litani River. Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib confirmed that at least 5,000 Lebanese troops would be deployed to the southern region following Israel’s pullout. Additionally, the U.S. is expected to assist in rebuilding Lebanon’s infrastructure, which has been severely damaged by Israeli airstrikes during the conflict.
Continued Military Strikes Amid Ceasefire Talks
Despite the ongoing ceasefire negotiations, Israel continued its military operations in Lebanon on Tuesday. Israeli airstrikes targeted the densely-populated southern suburbs of Beirut, as well as other regions in Lebanon. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, the airstrikes killed at least seven people and injured 37. The rapid escalation of these attacks highlights the fragile state of peace negotiations in the region.
Background of the Conflict
The conflict in Lebanon erupted after Hezbollah, backed by Iran, engaged in military operations against Israel. Meanwhile, the broader Middle East has been in turmoil following an attack on Israel by Hamas in October 2023, which led to widespread violence across the region, including the devastating war in Gaza. The conflict, which has already claimed over 43,000 lives across the Middle East, continues to cause immense suffering for civilians.
The ceasefire deal in Lebanon offers a glimmer of hope for peace, although the situation remains tense and further challenges lie ahead for the region.
