Hyderabad: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set for an exciting new season with the introduction of revised player regulations for 2025-27. One notable change allows players who have not played in the starting XI for the national team in any format for the past five years to be classified as uncapped players. This change has sparked discussions about the future of several veteran cricketers, including MS Dhoni, who could be retained by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as an uncapped player in the upcoming mega auction.

According to the new rule, any capped Indian player who hasn’t participated in international matches or lacks a Central Contract with the BCCI for five calendar years will be considered uncapped. This regulation is designed exclusively for Indian players and could impact several seasoned athletes.

Players Eligible to Play as Uncapped

  1. MS Dhoni
The iconic captain of CSK, Dhoni has led the franchise to five IPL titles since its inception in 2008. His last appearance for India was in the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. Thanks to the new rules, Dhoni can continue to be a pivotal part of CSK as an uncapped player.

  2. Mohit Sharma
Known for his exceptional death bowling, Mohit had a standout performance with the Gujarat Titans in the 2023 season. He last represented India in 2015, making him eligible to be classified as uncapped.

  3. Sandeep Sharma
This right-arm pacer has adapted his skills over the years, shifting from new-ball specialist to a dependable death-over bowler. Sandeep last played for India in an international match, solidifying his uncapped status.

  4. Piyush Chawla
The experienced leg-spinner, who has been a key player for the Mumbai Indians in recent seasons, last donned the Indian jersey in 2012. Under the new regulations, he qualifies to play as an uncapped player.

  5. Vijay Shankar
This all-rounder from Tamil Nadu has been a versatile asset for his franchise. With his last international appearance in 2019, Shankar is also set to be retained as an uncapped player.

The new retention rule is set to reshape team strategies as franchises look to capitalize on veteran experience while refreshing their squads for the upcoming IPL season.
