Tragic Incident in Chittoor District

A man was killed by a herd of elephants while he slept in a mango orchard in Bandaravandalapalli village, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. The victim, identified as Rajareddy, suffered fatal injuries in the late-night attack, prompting local authorities to respond urgently. His body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Ongoing Threat to Local Residents

Local sources indicate that the herd, consisting of 11 elephants, has been residing in the orchard, posing a significant threat to nearby residents. In light of this tragedy, police and forest officials are collaborating to safely relocate the elephants to their natural habitat, away from populated areas.

Authorities’ Response

Chittoor District Forest Officer S. Raghuram assured the public that all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the safe relocation of the elephants without causing harm to humans or property. Authorities are actively managing the situation to mitigate further risks.

Rising Cases of Man-Animal Conflict

This incident highlights the increasing frequency of man-animal conflicts in Chittoor district. Earlier this year, a wild elephant trampled a man to death in Ramakuppam mandal. Additionally, in August 2023, another man was killed by elephants in Peddapanjani Mandal. Reports of elephants damaging crops have also emerged, intensifying concerns among local communities.

As authorities work to address these escalating conflicts, the need for effective management strategies becomes increasingly critical to protect both human and animal populations.
