Alcaraz Overcomes Health Challenges
Carlos Alcaraz demonstrated resilience by defeating Andrey Rublev in straight sets during the group stage of the ATP Finals 2024 in Turin on November 13. After a disappointing loss to Casper Ruud in his opening match, Alcaraz bounced back, securing a 6-3, 7-6 (8) victory against the Russian player.
Respiratory Issues Didn’t Halt His Performance
Despite battling respiratory issues throughout the match and sporting pink nasal tape, Alcaraz showcased his determination and skill. He acknowledged the challenges he faced but focused on his game. “I did surprise myself. I just tried to focus on my game and what I had to do,” he stated in his on-court interview.
Rublev’s Strong Effort
World No. 8 Andrey Rublev, who lost his first match against Alexander Zverev, put up a tough fight against Alcaraz. He held strong during the second set, coming close to breaking Alcaraz’s serve at 2-2 but ultimately missing a routine shot. The match intensified as both players delivered powerful serves, culminating in a tense tiebreak. Alcaraz managed to fend off two set points before clinching the win.
Rublev’s ATP Finals Struggles
This defeat marks Rublev’s sixth consecutive loss in straight sets at the ATP Finals since reaching the semi-finals in 2022. With Alcaraz’s win, he moved to the top of the group standings but will need to secure a victory against world number two Zverev in his final match to guarantee advancement to the semi-finals.
Upcoming Matches
Zverev, who is also vying for a second win, is set to face Ruud later on Wednesday. If Ruud wins, he will secure a spot in the semi-finals, leaving Rublev without a chance to progress in the tournament.
