Video Sparks Controversy
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has leveled accusations against the Congress party, claiming it disrespected its president, Mallikarjun Kharge. This follows a viral video showing Kharge waiting outside a room where Priyanka Gandhi was filing her nomination papers for the Wayanad bypolls. BJP leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, used the footage to assert that the Congress harbors animosity towards Dalits.
Social Media Backlash
In response to the BJP’s claims, many social media users shared images of Kharge alongside prominent Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi during the nomination process. This led to a counter-narrative, suggesting that the situation was misrepresented.
Details from the Ground
According to an account from an India Today correspondent present at the event, Priyanka Gandhi was scheduled to file her nomination papers at the district collector’s office in Kalpetta at 1 PM, following a rally. However, she arrived late, entering the office at 1:24 PM with her husband Robert Vadra and son.
Nomination Process Explained
The nomination filing was recorded, as mandated by Election Commission rules, allowing for one proposer from recognized national or state parties. Upon her arrival, Priyanka informed the returning officer (RO) that Kharge, along with her mother and brother, were delayed due to a meeting. The RO indicated that they could enter when the second set of nomination papers was submitted.
Arrival of Congress Leaders
Priyanka submitted her first set of papers at 1:25 PM. Shortly after, Sonia Gandhi arrived, followed by Kharge and Congress MP KC Venugopal. However, they were prevented from entering by the guard until the RO finished scrutinizing the submitted papers. Interestingly, Rahul Gandhi also had to wait outside until the first submission was complete.
Misrepresentation of Events
The BJP’s narrative focused solely on Kharge’s wait outside, leading to claims of disrespect toward him and the Dalit community. The BJP’s statement highlighted their view that if Kharge was treated in such a manner, it reflected a broader disdain for Dalits within the Congress party.
This incident has ignited a political firestorm, with both parties using the situation to bolster their narratives in the lead-up to the Wayanad bypolls.
