Targeting Relief Efforts
Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, accused Israel of “intentionally targeting” a municipal council meeting in Nabatiyeh that was convened to discuss relief efforts. The accusation came in the wake of Israeli airstrikes that resulted in at least 27 fatalities across Lebanon, with many victims in the southern region.
Destruction in Qana
Israeli airstrikes struck various locations in Lebanon, including the southern town of Qana, where 15 people were killed. The Israeli military stated that the strikes aimed to eliminate a Hezbollah commander, Jalal Mustafa Hariri, believed to be responsible for operations in the area. However, local officials condemned the strikes as targeting civilians and crucial relief coordination efforts.
Scenes of Devastation
Photos and videos from the aftermath depicted flattened buildings and severe destruction. Rescue teams worked tirelessly to recover bodies and search for survivors amidst the rubble. In Nabatiyeh, where six people lost their lives, Mikati expressed grave concerns about the ongoing violence and its implications for Lebanon’s stability.
Escalating Conflict
The Israeli military reported targeting Hezbollah command centers and weapons facilities, claiming these were located in civilian areas. Lebanon’s crisis response unit documented 138 airstrikes and shellings on Wednesday alone. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched over 90 projectiles toward Israel, resulting in injuries to four civilians, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service.
Call for Solutions
Mikati questioned what solutions could be found amid such devastation, highlighting the dire situation in Lebanon as violence escalates. The conflict continues to evolve, with both sides engaged in a cycle of retaliatory strikes.
