An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck Japan’s Noto Peninsula in the north-central region on 26 November 2024. The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), was reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude was recorded at 6.1, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in the area.

No Tsunami Threat Issued Following Earthquake

The Japan Meteorological Agency quickly clarified that the earthquake posed no danger of a tsunami, alleviating fears of widespread coastal damage. Despite the severity of the quake, local authorities and emergency services reported no significant impact in terms of structural damage or casualties.

Earlier Earthquake in January 2024 Left Significant Damage

This earthquake comes just months after a devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto region on 1 January 2024. That earthquake resulted in the tragic loss of over 370 lives and caused severe damage to infrastructure, including roads and buildings. The January earthquake was one of the most significant seismic events to affect the region in recent years, highlighting the vulnerability of the area to strong seismic activity.

Shika Nuclear Power Plant Reports No Abnormalities

In the aftermath of the 26 November earthquake, Japanese authorities conducted safety checks at the Shika nuclear power plant located on the northern tip of the Noto Peninsula. NHK public television reported that no abnormalities were detected, and the two idled reactors at the plant sustained only minor damage. There were no signs of a radiation leak, though the incident has once again raised concerns about nuclear safety and the emergency response capabilities in the region.

Public Safety and Monitoring Efforts Continue

Despite the lack of significant damage or injuries, the Japanese government remains vigilant, continuing to monitor the situation closely. Local authorities are ensuring that any potential risks to public safety are addressed quickly and that recovery and safety protocols are in place for any aftershocks or unforeseen complications.

More Updates Expected as Authorities Continue to Assess the Situation

While no major damage has been reported at this time, officials have stated that they are continuing to assess the situation and will provide updates as necessary. Local government and disaster response teams are on high alert, prepared to respond should the situation change or if any further seismic activity occurs in the coming hours or days.
